Welcome to the University of South Wales new STAR Society
What is STAR? University of South Wales (USW) is a University of Sanctuary Scheme. The scheme aims to inspire and support universities to adopt a culture and practice of welcome within their own institutions, in their wider communities, and across the UK Higher Education sector. Additionally, we would like to introduce you to our new society, STAR, a student-run volunteering group trying to create change and make a difference in communities and universities nationwide.
The UK STARs have over 27 years of history. We aim to help refugees and people seeking asylum with a safer environment in their place of study and at home. We need your help! As a new society, we would be grateful for students to join our group. No experience is needed. Would you be interested in joining our committee or just becoming a member? The choice is yours.
We look forward to hearing from you. What do we intend to achieve at USW? Our first goal is to hold drop-ins and conversation classes, where there is an opportunity for international students, asylum seekers, and refugees to meet up in a calm setting. Get to know each other and practice their English. We want to hold fundraising events and trips to historical places in the area.
