Georgia Powell

Hello! I'm Georgia, your newly-elected VP Education at the Students' Union. I am very excited to be representing the student voice, as you (the students) are at the heart of everything we do.

I developed a passion for student representation early on in my time as a student at USW; I was a Course Representative for 2 years of my studies (where I even won Course Representative of the Year at the Student Choice Awards 2023) and more recently a Student Voice Representative for 1 year of my studies. It is from this  work that I became very interested in how I could help students feel represented and empowered to promote change during their student experience.

As I am a neurodiverse individual with a hidden disability - and I was a mature student during my time at university - I feel that I understand that the educational experience for students can differ greatly and that every experience is an important one. I want students to have the opportunities to pursue higher education, regardless of background and/or circumstances and to develop confidence within their studies as a result of these opportunities.

3 things you didn't know about Georgia:

  • I am a self-taught guitarist and singer. I've played my own gigs, open mic nights, local festivals and I even performed on stage at Cardiff Pride in 2016 - it was AWESOME!

  • I am a huge LEGO fan - totally addicted (anybody else find the clicking of the bricks super satisfying?). I mainly collect Harry Potter sets, Disney sets and anything space-themed.

  • I LOVE learning new skills; I am always finding new hobbies to try out. I've tried rock-climbing (not the outdoor-kind though), skateboarding and ice-skating. I'm currently into arts & crafts (I enjoy crocheting and diamond art) and video-gaming.

What Georgia is working on now:

Neurodiversity in Higher Education

This is an area of education that I feel very passionate about, as a neurodiverse individual, I understand that there are many challenges that students who are neurodiverse may face during their time at university. My hope is to raise awareness around these challenges and promote accessibility in a higher education setting.

Engagement with Students in Partnerships

With a number of students at USW studying through partnerships; outreach to these students is very important, as they may not neccessarily feel a part of the USW family - we at the Students' Union want them to feel involved. Increased presence within these partnerships, through academic meetings and liasing with students will allow for an understanding of the different needs that these students may have.
